Wi-Fi filtering and device-level parental controls solve different problems. One applies a shared policy at the network; the other can manage features on a particular phone, tablet or computer. Most families do better when they choose the layer for the job instead of expecting one tool to do everything.

Where Wi-Fi filtering is strongest

A router-level DNS policy can provide one baseline for many devices using the home network. It is especially useful for smart televisions, streaming hardware, consoles and guest devices that cannot carry the family’s chosen parental-control app.

Its decisions are usually made at domain or service level. It can reduce access to a blocked category, but it does not inspect the meaning of every post, video or private message within an allowed platform.

Where device controls are strongest

Operating-system tools such as Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link can manage supported apps, purchases, permissions, daily limits and downtime. A dedicated product may add web filtering, reports, location or communication monitoring, depending on the device and plan.

This layer can stay with a supported device outside the home, but it must be installed or configured correctly. A television, console or visitor’s phone may sit outside its coverage.

The blind spots to plan for

  • Mobile data: home-network filtering does not automatically follow the device.
  • Encrypted routes: VPNs and separately chosen encrypted DNS can cause a different resolver or route to be used.
  • Shared platforms: blocking a domain is different from moderating the chat inside it.
  • Device permissions: controls can fail if the child retains administrator rights or required permissions are removed.
  • Updates: operating-system and app changes can alter how a control behaves.

Choose by household, not by slogan

For younger children with a few managed devices

Start with child accounts, installation approval, platform privacy settings and a home-network baseline. Keep the rules simple enough that every caregiver understands them.

For teenagers who carry phones away from home

Device-level controls may matter more outside the house, while network filtering still covers televisions, consoles and shared devices at home. Discuss privacy and growing responsibility openly; secret surveillance can damage the trust needed for disclosure.

For mixed-age or device-heavy homes

Use a shared network baseline, then add profiles or device controls where ages and needs differ. Review exceptions rather than weakening the rule for everyone.
